    Brace Against/In

    I have another question about the usage of the verb "brace". According to definition 3b of this dictionary, the preposition "against" should be used with "brace", so that one could "brace a foot against something". But then, there is this:

    He braced his foot in the stirrup to prepare to mount, when a tug at his sleeve stopped him.
    Is the preposition "in" wrong? Would "he braced his foot against the stirrup" be better?

    Re: Brace Against/In

    'He braced his foot in the stirrup' is just fine.

    He made sure his foot was firmly and safely positioned in the stirrup before mounting his horse.

    If you need a dictionary reference to convince you, see

    to steady or prepare (oneself or something)
    (Collins)

    The dictionary link you provided also gave three examples of 'braced for', so 'against' is not the only preposition that works after 'braced'.

    Re: Brace Against/In

    I would say "he placed" or "he put" his foot in the stirrup.

    @MikeNewYork

    So, you do think that "he braced his foot in the stirrup" is a bit off?

    Re: Brace Against/In

    I would not use that verb there. That doesn't make it wrong.
