have eaten / had eaten : at the end of meal?

    Hi,

I have seached for 'this is the first time' on the Internet, but I have been feel confused because some people do not agree with another. Here is the counfusion:

Shoud I use 'the present perfect' or 'the past perfect' at the end of meal?

1- This is the first time that I have eaten sushi.
2- This is the first time that I had eaten sushi.

    3- I haven't eaten sushi until now.
    4- I hadn't eaten sushi until now.

Thes conversions take place at the end of meal.

    Thanks.

    NOT A TEACHER

As long as you say, 'This is the first time...', you use a present perfect simple form.

I believe there is a BrE vs AmE difference here, based on previous threads.

BrE = This is the first time I have eaten sushi.
AmE = This is the first time I ate sushi.

I'm sure an AmE speaker will correct me if I've misremembered it.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Both will be heard in AmE. I would prefer the present perfect there.

I would certainly use the present perfect there.

This is the first time I have ...
That was the first time I had ...
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
