    comprehension

    Dear teachers,

    Please read the following:

If the flights of Dryden therefore are higher, Pope continues longer on the wing. If of Dryden's fire the blaze is brighter, of Pope's the heat is more regular and constant, Dryden often surpasses expectation, and Pope never falls below it.

Could you please kindly explain the italicized part?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

    Jiang

    Dear Rover_KE,

This is a passage from an exercise and there is no author.

    Re: comprehension

This is from a criticism of those poets by Samuel Johnson.

    Re: comprehension

Jiang, in my opinion the author believes that Dryden is flashier and probably better than Pope at times, but Dryden can also be erratic. He/she believes Pope to be more down-to-earth and steadier.

I agree- Dryden best is better than Pope's, but Pope always maintains a certain standard, while Dryden can sink down to lesser verse..
