    Which sentence is correct?

Can someone please tell me which one of these alternatives is correct? One of the options for both were what my "editor" told me but I'm not convinced he is right. Would just like a second opinion. Thank you.

The events surrounding the fall of the Franklin Community Federal Credit Union mark/marked one of the darkest periods in the history of the State of Nebraska.

The prominence and esteem of the perpetrators involved were the main reasons/was the main reason why the case received so much attention.

Which of the options was your choice?

Please note that a better title would have been mark/marked.

    Re: Which sentence is correct?

Well I had a different line but I think "marked" is the correct choice, and I used "was the main reason."

    Thank you.

    Re: Which sentence is correct?

I would also have chosen marked. I could go with "was the main reason, but one could make a case for "were" the main reason. It depends on whether one sees "prominence and esteem" as one or two things.

    Re: Which sentence is correct?

I prefer "mark." I don't necessarily see the marking as just a past event.

    Thanks for your responses.
The fall of the credit union happened in 1988.

Then the past is even more appropriate for me.
