What does it command of us

Quote from a Harvard open course :
"Well this leaves us one big question, what is the categorical imperative? What is the supreme principle of morality? What does it command of us? Kant gives three versions, three formulations of the categorical imperative, I want to mention two, and then see what you think of them. The first version, the first formula he calls the formula of the universal law. Act only on that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law."

    My questions are:
1.I don't see why "of" is needed here ?
2.how to understand this sentence? The structure of the sentence seems a bit abstruse to me
    Thanks.

Re: What does it command of us

1 Of is necessary here because without it the sentence would be incomplete- you would need to say something like What does it command us to do?.
2 It is abstruse. It means something like only act on a maxim that you would wish to be a universal law.

Re: What does it command of us

1.Can I interpret it as "what does it commands us of ,it commands us of something, something refers back to what."?
2.The sentence seems incomplete ,"Act only on that maxim whereby you can (do what) at the same time will (do what) that it should become a universal law." it seems that something has missed there.
