seal kits........it was or they were?

    1) This customer has tested these seal kits previously and found that it was not reliable and causing oil leaks easily.

    2) This customer has tested these seal kits previously and found that they were not reliable and causing oil leaks easily.

Dear teachers, please teach me which sentence is correct.

Do you think that "seal kits" requires the singular or the plural?
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

I think the word before 'seal kits' has already told the answer.

    Not a teacher.

I think "seal kits" requires plural.

    "seal kit" requires singular.

But I have already used sentence 1) to my manager. Later I think it was wrong. So I just want to confirm here whether sentence 1) is also acceptable.

    Sentence 1 is grammatically incorrect.

Here is how I would word sentence 2:

This customer has previously tested these seal kits and found that they were not reliable and caused oil to leak easily.
