    object or complement?

I wonder whether the infinitives in the sentences below function as objects or complements of the verbs:

    Peter wants to sleep
    We intended to leave early

According to Swan, they are complements. However, some sites (among them is Purdue Owl, which I consider trustworthy) claim they are direct objects.
I was wondering if someone could shed some light on the matter.

    Thank you.

Maybe this distinction will help you a bit: you can say that an object is a complement; conversely, you cannot say that a complement is an object.

Swan calls it a complement; others may call it an object.

Don't pay too much attention to terminology.
