    Hi, I am a newcomer, I cannot understand the meaning of the red part of the following sentence of "American Ways" by Gary Althen. Would you please explain it to me? Thanks a

    People all over the country sought ways to help; they donated blood, set up fund-raising drives, and volunteered at the attack sites.
