    vast unknown

"European sailors were afraid to sail straight westward into this vast unknown."

Can I write this sentence in the following way?

"European sailors were afraid to sail straight westward into this unknown vast."

Why 'unknown' is written after the word "vast"? If I place 'unknown' before 'vast', what differences will arise?

This is ungrammatical. In the context "unknown" is a noun and "vast" is the adjective describing it.

    Re: vast unknown

Yes. Unknown can be either a noun or an adjective. Vast is always an adjective, never a noun. So there's no such thing as the unknown vast.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
