Smile where it's illustrations perplexed me

Hello. I don't quite understand the underlined part below.
"The speaker was confused by the illustrations of an old anatomy, but was also inspired by the illustrations."
Can it mean something like that?
    Thank you.

--------(from David G. Fores's comment on his sketch of "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Poe)

For "The Tell-Tale Heart" I couldn't stop thinking about how to show the heart in the final scene, without it being too umpleasant.
I considered Poe's horror to be more focused on emotions and I didn't want to rejoice in guts and blood. One day I happened to come across an old anatomy from 1543(The humani corporis fabrica by Andreas Vesalius) where it's illustrations perplexed me. I also used these anatomic studies for the dismemberment of the old man. I believe this worked out perfectly... and it also saved me fro the trouble of drawing a gory heart!

You could interpret it that way. That's not exactly what he says though. Yes, he was confused in some way by them (he doesn't say how) and he used the example. It doesn't actually say he was inspired by them.
