I have never seen such an expression.

I think surrounded by mystery is a correct expression.

Shrouded by mystery is another expression I know. I like it.

Where did you encounter this phrase, Pete?

Please give us a complete sentence to consider.

No, there is no complete sentence, I wrote it myself, but I think it is not very correct. "Surrounded" by mystery is the sentence I was looking. And "Shrouded by mystery" is very elegant (thanks José Manuel).

    How about "triangulated by enigma"?

I would use shrouded in mystery.

I am not a native, but is it not a bit recherché?

I saw the expression with the preposition "by" somewhere, but I have to admit that "in" is the common preposition. Or perhaps the correct one?

Is "shrouded by" correct or not?

Yes, it wasn't a serious attempt.
"Shrouded in mystery" is the best suggestion so far.

Re: Alternative Expression to "circled by mistery"

Thanks. Surely "shrouded in mystery" is the alternative if we use "shrouded", but I would like to know if "shrouded by mystery" is completely wrong or just uncommon. Because I have seen it many times, like in this article: http://www.timesonline.com/news/year...=image&photo=1 Is it wrong english?
