    "turned out to grass"

    Could you please explain to me the meaning of the following sentence (about a pony) and especially of the phrase in bold?

    He used to draw the pony-cart, but we donít use it any more now heís turned out to grass.
    If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

    Is it an idiom? We can we use it when talking about a horse only, can't we?

    It's also used metaphorically for people when their services are no longer required and they are compulsorily laid off.

    Not A Teacher

    Some people use a similar phrase "put out to pasture".
