    comma before 'but'

Is it necessary or not? In what way does it change the meaning of a sentence?

    Re: comma before 'but'

I cannot do it. My learner asked me if there are any grammar rules connected with using comma before 'but'. That's all...

Then you will have to tell your "learner" that it depends on the sentence. Are you teaching English to someone?
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

You could tell your learner to become a member of the forum so that they can ask us directly.

I teach quite a different language. I can speak English a little, and a girl asked me about commas in English, just by the way. So don't be snide quoting inappropriate words, I'm not a native speaker or an English teacher to be perfect
I'm here, because I often need your help

    Re: comma before 'but'

There was nothing snide about my post, nor was quoting "learner" inappropriate. You called her "my learner". I was going to change it to "my student" but as your profile does not show that you are a teacher, I did not consider that you might have students.

It would have been clear if you had said something like "I teach Polish/Spanish/Russian/Chinese etc. One of my students, who knows I speak some English, asked me if there is an rule in English about putting a comma after 'but'." You gave us no context and no explanation.

As Rover said, that student can join the forum and ask us questions directly.

Perhaps she can but doesn't want, or has already joined the forum but asked me, just by the way. I don't know, it doesn't matter. It was me who was asked for help, and I cannot see anything strange about that. Then, I asked you because I use commas just intiutively, I don't know any rules.

    Re: comma before 'but'

If that is the case, I don't think we can help.
