    Smile may as well have

    Hello. Would you please tell me what the last sentence means?
    Does it mean "I didn't cry. But I think it was better to cry then."?

    (The speaker got hit by a street gang and now he is in the bathroom to clean his face.)
    I got all the blood off my face. I wiped until my face was clean .
    I looked better. But not that much.
    And all the while, I thought about the money that wasn't in my pocket. And the food that wasn't in my belly.
    And the hurt that was all over me.
    I didn't cry. But I may as well have.
