    meaning of sentence

I know the meaning of 'throats', but I failed to understand the meaning of following sentence. Would anybody like to explain it?

"Jim and Joe are brothers who have been at each otherís throats since their childhood days; each one always trying to outdo the other."

    Thanks to all.

It's an idiom. They are always fighting/competing/arguing.

    Re: meaning of sentence

Please note that a better title would have been at each other's throats.
