All he needed was time to get organized

    Hi
Please help me understand the meaning of the sentence in brackets extracted from "The Accidental Tourist" book:

All he needed was time to get organized. [Maybe he couldn't get his guidebook organized, so he would organize the house]. There was something comforting about that, and over the next week or so he went all through the house, setting up new systems.

    I have two options:
    1. Maybe he couldn't organize the book because his house wasn't organized and he wanted to fix it. But in this case I don't understand the meaning of "so" which I'd replace with "because".

    2. Maybe he couldn't organize the book but he would organize the house. But now I'd replace "so" with "but".

Antyvan, I have changed the title of your thread so that it is specifically relevant to this thread. Thread titles should include some or all of the words you are querying.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Re: All he needed was time to get organized

I'd like to help you. The answer to your question is in the second part of the paragraph you quoted.

He had trouble organizing his guidebook (whatever the reason for his trouble may be), so to make himself feel better...since he wasn't organizing his guidebook, he thought he should organize something else, anything really. So in his mind, the best thing to do was to start organizing his house instead of the guidebook.

'There was something comforting about that (he felt 'organizing his house' was comforting him), and over the next week or so he went all through the house, setting up new systems.'

Antyvan, there's no need to make a new post for this. Your click on 'Thank' was all that was necessary.
