    What is wrong with "paper"?

A native speaker who listened to my recording wrote to me that the intonation and pronunciation is OK, but I should practice pronouncing the word "paper". I understand it's difficult to give an advice on pronunciation, still I hope someone will help. What is wrong with my pronouncing of "paper"? Here's the recording.

If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

Look up the pronunciation of the word pay.

Then look up the pronunciation of the word per.

Then put them together. Stress the first syllable.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

I still can't make it out - is my recorded pronunciation of "paper" very much different from the one in the dictionary:
