    misspelled

    Is this sentence correct?

    I am returning your cheque to you as my name is misspelled.

    Yes.

    In American English, we would say: I am returning your check to you because my name is misspelled.

    Remember that mis- is a prefix. So you keep the S, even if the word it prefixes starts with an S. Similarly, misspent is correct.

    Since no word begins with a double S, there's never a problem.

    It's a good question. Many people misspell misspell!

    In BE, you're more likely to see 'misspelt'.

    Good point. We spell it that way, too, sometimes. They're both good.

    But we'd never say "misspended."
