Smile not farther than hearts could imagine

Hello. I don't quite understand what the underlined part sentence in this context below.
What does "hearts" mean in this sentence?
    Please help. Thank you.

-------from a children's novel, Honest truth by Dan Gemeinhart.
Thereís more than one kind of truth. Thereís the truth that you can measure, the truth on maps and charts and in
books of facts. And maybe in that kind of truth, Mark didnít reach the top. Maybe he didnít even come close.
    Maybe in
that kind of truth he got lost and wandered off the trail and didnít come anywhere close to the top of anything.
But in the other kind of truth, the kind of truth you feel in a deeper place, in that kind of truth the maps donít matter.
In that kind of truth the skinny, bald kid with the disease eating away at him and the little brown dog with one brown eye
and one green eye made it farther than they ever should have. They made it farther than minds and maps could
measure, but not farther than hearts could imagine.

In that kind of truth, Mark totally made it. He made it to the top of every mountain.
What Jessie said wasnít a lie. It was just a better kind of truth.

Re: not farther than hearts could imagine

The heart is supposed to be the seat of the soul. The soul can imagine things and make them true in some people's opinions. You get your opinions from your heart when you don't like what your mind is telling you. Of course, your 'heart' is really just another part of your mind that produces delusions and other subjective 'truths'.

Re: not farther than hearts could imagine

Too difficult for me. Then could "minds" mean "reason" in this context?
"In a better kind of truth, the boy and the dog made it farther than they had ever planned and made it farther than minds and maps could measure.
But they didn't reach the place farther than hearts could imagine?"
    Still confusing...

Re: not farther than hearts could imagine

It might be confusing because it's not logical. If you don't like the truth, you can imagine a different "truth", which, though not true in objective terms, makes you feel better. The writer is asserting that this is a better type of truth. There is no limit to the truths that the heart can imagine, so he could not go further than infinity. But he went as far as he needed to go. He made it to the top of every [imaginary] mountain.
They didn't reach the place farther than hearts could imagine because there is no place farther than hearts can imagine. You can imagine as much as you want.
