    Which are correct:

    1-He opened the drawer, taking out some papers.
    2-He opened the drawer, then taking out some papers.

    3-He became a sailor on a freighter, jumping ship at a South American port.
    4-He became a sailor on a freighter, then jumping ship at a South American port.
    5-He became a sailor on a freighter in 1886, later jumping ship at a South American port.

    1,3, 5

    2 & 4 would take a past tense not a gerund for me.
