people in ancient Egypt demanded they were given mummified animals

    Hello all users!

Scientists have discovered that religious people in ancient Egypt demanded they were given mummified animals as gifts.

Does "people in ancient Egypt demanded they were given mummified animals" mean the same as "people in ancient Egypt demanded (that) they (should) be given mummified animals"?

    I think so.

Do you think I am on the right track?

In my opinion, "people in ancient Egypt demanded they were given mummified animals" could also be expressed as "people in ancient Egypt demanded (that) they are given mummified animals" or "people in ancient Egypt demanded (that) they be given mummified animals" or "people in ancient Egypt demanded to be given mummified animals".

    What do you think?

    Thank you.

With the exception of a minor tense error (noted above), I agree with your interpretations and alternate suggestions.

In fact, in my opinion, either of your last two versions is preferable to the original text.
