    Beat ...

    Hi,

Can anybody explain to me in what sense the word "beat" is used in the context below?

“They say you are leaving us to-day, sir?” the cripple said to me.
“I must. I have to beat Marseilles on Monday morning. I shall go by the 10:50 express to-night from the Gare de Lyon. It's a good train . . . but you ought to know it—you were employed by the P. L. M. before you fell ill, weren't you?”
He shut his eyes, and his face became suddenly very pale as he replied: “Yes . . . I know it . . . too well . . .”

    10:50 Express, Maurice Level, 1920

I know the meaning of the word but here it makes a little sense to me ...

    Thanks

    Re: Beat ...

It looks like a typo for "be at" to me.

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Hello, Johny:

    Just a gentle reminder.

    (1) It makes little sense. = It does NOT make much sense.

    (2) It makes a little sense. = It DOES make a little sense.
