    Past simple or Past perfect?

    Hello all!

I have read one article focused on Tennis and found these sentences where I am not sure whether they are correct or not.

    1) Did you know it was the fourth time that Federer and Nadal won ATP title on the same weekend last week?

    2) This was the first time in Rogerīs career when he managed to save 100%.....

According to what I have been teached there should be used past perfect in these sentences, shouldnīt be?

    - Did you know it was the fourth time that Federer and Nadal had won ATP title on the same weekend last week?

    - This was the first time in Rogerīs career when he had managed to save 100%.....

    Thank you!!

Re: Past simple or Past perfect?

There is no reason to use the past perfect in those sentences. And "teached" should be "taught".

Re: Past simple or Past perfect?

Today it is 2015. I will speak about e.g. one tournament in 2012 - It was the third time (in 2012) I had won that tournament. Therefore I thought the sentence with Nadal and Federer winning the trophy works the same way...

It is not the same as your original sentence.

Re: Past simple or Past perfect?

But where is the difference? Could you tell me please?

    - It was the fourth time that Federer and Nadal had managed...or It was the third time I had won.......

    - - This was the first time in Rogerīs career when h e had managed to save 100%.... again I would say it is one of the examples how to use past perfect from books.

Re: Past simple or Past perfect?

The past perfect is usually used to establish the sequence of events of two actions in the past. Using third and fourth time does not fit that. The simple past works fine.

You agreed this below was ok....

Today it is 2015. I will speak about e.g. one tournament in 2012 - It was the third time (in 2012) I had won that tournament. Therefore I thought the sentence with Nadal and Federer winning the trophy works the same way...

.....but - It was the fourth time that Federer and Nadal had managed....
    - This was the first time in Rogerīs career he had managed to save 100%.... here past perfect shouldnīt be used? It doesnīt make sense.

You wrote: It is not the same as your original sentence.

Well. You didnīt say exactly that you agree but logically it shows that it probably differs from the first examples!

I can definitely say: It is the first time I have driven a car so I thought it works the same way here: It was the first time I had driven a car!!

If not could you explaing why I can not use it please?
