    Does this make sense:

I bought a box of brand new shoe laces for my sister

Can I say this to my sister-

I opened up the shoe lace box for you.

    OR

I opened up the box of laces for you.

    Either is grammatically acceptable.

However, individual pairs of shoe laces usually don't come in a box. Typically they are just wrapped with a band of paper or plastic, or maybe taped/tied to a piece of cardboard. Sometimes they aren't even enclosed in plastic. I'd use the term 'pack' or 'package' instead of 'box'.

I suppose stores that sell shoelaces might receive boxes of multiple shoelace pairs, for merchandise stocking, but as far as I've ever seen, individual pairs of laces don't come in boxes.

My sister is in the shoe industry and I bought her boxes of multiple shoelace pairs for her business. I hope that clarifies things.

Ah, then yes, in that case the term 'box' is appropriate, and both of your sentences are fine, with no difference in meaning.
