    turned/turns out usage

I say to my current employee:

I am very cautious who I hire these days because of my last employee. She told me she was a banker for her last job but it turned/turns out she was an illegal immigrant.

    Are both okay here?

Both are OK, but she might have been both a banker in her last job and an illegal immigrant.
