Thread: guessing function of infinitive verbs

1. Re: guessing function of infinitive verbs

I understand a lil more but when a direct object has an infinitive I don't know if it's an adjectival infinitive or adverbial. I'm sorry if I'm giving you a hard time.

2. Re: guessing function of infinitive verbs

Usually, when an infinitive directly follows a direct object it is adjectival. But we would need actual sentences to say for sure.

I think you made a sentence.

'I buy food to eat.'── The infinitive is adverbial because food would not eat.
'I want him to eat.'── The infinitive is adjectival because a human would eat.

That's what I think as a learner, not a teacher.

I think it describes "food".

8. Re: guessing function of infinitive verbs

Why do you think that?

9. Re: guessing function of infinitive verbs

I think 'food to eat' can mean 'food to be eaten' and both 'to eat' and 'to be eaten' are adjectival, but I am not a teacher.

'I buy food to feed my cat.'
I think the infinitive is adverbial. Am I right or wrong this time?

Are you confused too? Because I'm confused but I think you was right the first time because you can say I buy food in order to eat.

Not a teacher.
