Can men and women be (the) best friends?

    Hi,

    *self-made*

    - Can men and women be (the) best friends?

I would like to ask if I should omit 'the' in the sentence or not. I think it is better without it, but I am not sure.

    Thanks.

Omit it. "Best friends" is one case where we don't use "the" with a superlative.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Yes, we omit it in 'best friends', but you can say 'the best of friends'.

Can 'Dogs are the best friends of man' be an exception to this case?

    Can I say that?

This should be "man's" as the generic for "humankind" not "men's."
