    A whiskey.

Barman: What would you like to order?
    Guest: A whiskey, please.

Which does "A whiskey" mean: a bottle of whiskey or a glass of whiskey?

    Re: A whiskey.

There are a lot of whiskeys/whiskys. In most cases, the customer would specify a brand or type.

    Re: A whiskey.

If they wanted a whole bottle, they would need to say so in a bar.

    Re: A whiskey.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's illegal in most of the US. I've never actually tried it. They can only sell it by the drink, at least in most states.

The whole 'give me a bottle of whiskey' thing is sort of a western movie trope anyway.
