    Are they correct ? Please give comments.

    (1) David didn't work as hard as Tom to always stand first in class.
    (2) David didn't work as hard to always stand first as Tom.

    Both are incorrect. Both are ungrammatical and unnatural.

    David didn't work as hard as Tom, so it was Tom who always came out first in class.
