    On/Off Routine

I have a question about the usages of "on" and "off" with "routine":

    1. "He was on his routine."
    2. "He was off his routine."

The above usages could be found on the web, but not in dictionaries. So, are the sentences wrong?

    Re: On/Off Routine

As they stand, neither sounds natural to me!
Can you provide a longer sentence or the context you have in mind?

No, they're not wrong. However, the first one seems strange to me - the thing about routines is that you don't really need to specify somebody's on one, unless as part of the larger context you've mentioned someone being off their routine. Even then, I'd probably say something like 'back on his routine' or 'back to his routine'.

The second one seems more natural to me. It's similar to phrases like 'off his game', 'off his stride', 'off his mark', etc. They all refer to not doing something as well as it's normally done.
