was suggested to do / was recommend to do

    Hi,

    *self-made*

    - Britain was suggested to maintain its position as a world power.

    - Britain was recommended to maintain its position as a world power.

I would like to ask if it is OK to use 'was suggested to do / was recommend to do' or not.

    Thanks.

Re: was suggested to do / was recommend to do

    Neither is correct.
You could use "urged" or "advised" instead.

    * recommend somebody to do something

    - We'd recommend you to book your flight early.

Although we can use 'recommend somebody to do something, we cannot use 'be recommend to do.' This is really confused. Why not?

By the way, thanks for the answers.

Re: was suggested to do / was recommend to do

We'd recommend you do something or that you do something.

I guess this is because some people do not accept the use of 'recommend somebody to do something', but I am not a teacher.
