    people to have guns

    Hi,

    - ''But beyond a certain point of development, on this same basis, it is more important for a people to have guns in hand than to eat more than the year before.''

This sentence is from Fanon's A Dying Colonialism, p.12. I would like to ask if we can use 'ing' instead of 'to eat' after 'than.' Plus, I would like to ask if we can omit 'to.'

    - ''But beyond a certain point of development, on this same basis, it is more important for a people to have guns in hand than eating /eat more than the year before.''

    Thanks.

    Re: people to have guns

There is symmetry between "to have" and "to eat" that is best left as it is. It is parallel construction.

I don't understand what having guns has to do with eating. In my experience, people with guns can eat anything they want.

I think he's saying that at some point guns are more important than bread, if you want freedom beyond just having sufficient food.

Economists are always talking about guns and roses. No, wait, guns and butter.

    Re: people to have guns

Ah, yes, guns and butter, aka Macro 101. Where my professor was more interested in getting enough students to subscribe to the Wall Street Journal to enable his free subscription than he was delivering course content. Six weeks into class, and he was still asking if anybody was interested.

At the time, I thought it strange that an economics professor didn't realize the futility of appealing to college undergrads who a) probably didn't have all that much discretionary income and b)would probably be spending any extra money they might have on alcohol.

I thought that should have been a pretty obvious economical principle. As I recall, he never did get his quota. Maybe he should have used 'beer and newspapers' instead of his 'guns and butter'....

President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto famously said that "if India builds the [nuclear] bomb, we will eat grass or leaves, even go hungry, but we will get one of our own."

North Koreans dream of having grass or leaves.

He may have thought that, since he was getting paid anyway, the marginal utility/futility of spending some of that time on an appeal for more income (or lower costs) was greater/lesser, respective to utility/futility, than that of more teaching for undergraduates for that period of time.
