Their funds now (being) exhausted, they . . .

    Hello,

    - Their funds were exhausted. They knew they would have to leave this luxury hotel soon

The passive one: Their funds now (being) exhausted, they knew they would have to leave this luxury hotel soon.

I would like to ask if I should use 'being' in the passive form or should I omit it.

    Thanks.

I'd leave it out. I'd change the position of "soon", too, placing it between "would" and "have".

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

I am not anwering your question, but I am sharing something from one of my favorite books:

"Occasionally the participle is omitted in the absolute phrase, when it can be easily supplied by the reader."

The scholar gives this example: "Dinner over, we assembled in the parlor."
