    It grows dark

    Hello,

Can a good soul help me tu understand what exactly the author means in the bold text?

"This liquor," he continued, as we moved back into the other room, "is made by taking pure mercury and exposing it in a certain manner to the action of the sun and of the air. The fire then passes over it and it is ready to receive the influence of the constellation Virgo, and of Saturn the planet. Thus it grows exceedingly hard - yet at the end. Behold!"

He placed a drop upon the palm of his hand ...

    Aleister Crowley, The Drug, 1909

    Thank you

Are you asking about 'hard' or 'dark'?

    Re: It grows dark

Sorry, it should be "it grows exceedingly dark."

    Re: It grows dark

Up to a certain point in the distillation process the liquor becomes dark (remember they start with mercury which is bright and reflective), but at the end it is apparently light in color or perhaps transparent. We don't know for sure, but since he contrasts with "- yet at the end. Behold!", it has again changed.

Don't try this at home, folks....
