generally speaking the more northerly the breeding ground

    Hello,
I cannot understand the meaning of the colored text in the following. I'd appreciate it if you can help me to understand this.
"Not all birds migrate, but generally speaking the more northerly the breeding ground, the more likely is it that a species will migrate south for the winter."

Re: generally speaking the more northerly the breeding ground

Generally speaking = in general = usually
The more northerly = the further north
the breeding ground = the breeding ground (is)

Usually, the further north you find the breeding ground of a particular species, the more likely it is that that species migrates south each year.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
