    What does the sentence mean?

What does the word 'over ' mean and why is there 'the'?

The lack of a strong gravitational pull has caused any water the moon may have had to leak out into space over the 4.6 billion years that it has been in existence.

Re: What does the sentence mean?

Here 'over' means 'during'. We use a definite article because we're considering those 4.6 billion years as one single span of time.
