    reputed to have been

Please help I can't understand the meaning of following sentence
"They were as much opposed to the works of Pandira as they are reputed to have been to those of Jesus, yet they permitted Pandira's name to be mentioned several times in the Talmud."

    Thank you in advance.

    Re: reputed to have been

It is reputed that they were opposed to the works of Pandira and Jesus to an equal extent.
