I never tried / I have never tried

    Which is the correct one?
    - I never tried to do that.
    - I have never tried to do that.

And, in the case they are both correct, when I should use the first and when the second?

    Thanks!

They are both correct. Which one should be used depends on context.

Re: I never tried / I have never tried

I never tried to do that when I was in my twenties.
I have never tried to do that, and I don't think I ever will.

Re: I never tried / I have never tried

So if my sentence is "I feel that I never tried to runaway from here", depending on this context it will be better using "I feel that I've never tried to runaway from here".
    Did I get it?

Re: I never tried / I have never tried

    Again, both can work!
I feel that I never tried to run away from here when I was a child because I loved this place.
I feel that I've never tried to run away from here because I love this place.

Try to make your reference point "now" instead of "here."

Re: I never tried / I have never tried

I feel that I've never tried to run away from here, but I'd like to.
