Using "a" before musical instruments (Can you play a guitar?)

    Hello,

I was asked if it is OK to say "Can you play a piano/guitar?" since most of the time people say "I play the guitar/piano". I think it should be OK, but I would like to know if there is any reason "a" cannot be used, so that I don't give out wrong information.

I have read the thread "the" before musical instruments, but it does not discuss about "a".

    Thank you

It's okay, but as you said, it's more common to use 'the', or as the thread you referenced mentioned, omit the article entirely.

Posts #4 and 6 in the linked thread apply equally to 'a' [musical instrument].

Thank you, Rover_KE. In #4 it says that some people drop the article entirely. But I think it may not be OK to do so when asking a question. Am I right?

For example, it is OK to say - I play guitar. But it may not be OK to ask - Can you play guitar? Here either 'a' or 'the' is needed.

    Thank you

The question is fine without an article.
