    "our place in time"

    Hi everyone!

I learn English by listening to songs. I just listened to this song called "Our place in time". I don't understand the title and this part of the lyric:

We'll find our place in time
A place in time beyond the sun
We'll find our place in time
A place in time to call our own

Could you help explain their meanings? Thank you.

    Re: "our place in time"

I believe that this song goes with the TV programme "The 4400":

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_4400

If so, I think you might be having difficulty because the whole song has two meanings:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ4938ojq0E

    1. It is a straightforward love song.
    2. It is describing the mysterious disappearance, and later reappearance, in time of the 4400 people in the TV programme.

    So:
    1. The love version: Is basically saying, somewhere, sometime, whether it's even on another planet or place beyond the sun, we (the lovers), will find one another again. This ties in with the first part of the song...."so long ago.....etc, etc". which can be taken to mean a lover remembering a time when she was together with her partner.

    However,

    2. The same words can also all be taken to refer to all the people who have gone missing. If you think about it from their perspective: "So long ago....", at time when the 4400 people were all in their ordinary lives before they disappeared. The chorus you posted, "We'll find our place......", is basically the longing of those missing people to find their way home, from wherever they have been taken.

    Does that help?

    Re: "our place in time"

It sounds like a romantic piece -- a guy and a girl who want to be together.

It reminds me of this song from West Side Story:

    SOMEWHERE

    A GIRL
    There's a place for us,
    Somewhere a place for us.
Peace and quiet and open air
    Wait for us
    Somewhere.

    There's a time for us,
Some day a time for us,
    Time together with time spare,
Time to learn, time to care,
    Some day!

    Somewhere.
We'll find a new way of living,
We'll find a way of forgiving
    Somewhere . . .

    There's a place for us,
A time and place for us.
Hold my hand and we're halfway there.
Hold my hand and I'll take you there
    Somehow,
    Some day,
    Somewhere!

Although listening to songs in English can certainly give you a good idea as to how your listening comprehension is coming along, it's not a good idea to use song lyrics as your sole source for learning English. Song lyrics are frequently ungrammatical and words are used simply to fit the rhythm and rhyme of the song. I hope you are using reliable, standard English-learning sources too.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: "our place in time"

I was introduced to UsingEnglish, TED talks, British Council website, and so on to help improve my English. However, I like song best because it's entertaining. But I agree with what you mentioned about "using reliable, standard English-learning sources". I'll keep improving my English. I'm so glad that I registered myself here. When I have questions about English, I can ask the teachers here.
