    Which of the sentences a-d mean
    1. There were only three women in all and they did all there was to do
    and which mean
    2. There were three women per task
    ?

    All of the sentences can either mean that there were only three women in all and they did everything or that there were three women per task. The ambiguity is frustrating, but cannot be resolved by the use of one these sentences over another alone. I would say that (d) tends more to mean that there were three women per task, while the others tend more towards meaning that there were only three women in total, but those tendencies are only my own instinctive first interpretations.
