    Artists have to live, right? Eat, sleep, breathe, build. The great difference is when you have a government as a patron or anyone else as a patron, who made no demands on you at all, there were no enlarged notions of making that extra buck...

    Does this mean "they didn't feel pressured to make more money"?

    Reading this quote in "A Modern Mosaic" (Ed. Townsend Ludington), the speaker appears to be saying that the patronage of the government meant that artists were left to work in their own way on the projects they were given, and they found that fulfilling. There was no need or desire to pursue ideas that were motivated only by their commercial possibilities.
