    evolving of technology

The refined magnetic compass with its wind rose evolved even further over time. The wind rose was glued to the top of a lodestone and placed in a covered container of water. Later, oils were used instead of water to stabilize the compass disk from erratic movement...

1 and 2 are paraphrases of the above paragraph. Do the underlined have to be "evolution" and "refinement"?
These answers were treated wrong ones in a test.

1.Through human history, people have witnessed the evolving of technology in order to meet today's needs.
2.The refining of the computer from a machine that filled an entire room to a small hand-held device happened over the course of several decades.

1 and 2 are not paraphrases of the original paragraph. What was the test question?

    Re: evolving of technology

Fill out the blank .. underlined
The argument about the answers is regarding if "evolution" and "evolving" both work, and "refinement" and "refining".
Some students gave the latters, which were treated as wrong. It seems the formers sound more natural.

    Re: evolving of technology

I would use refinement and evolution, but I wouldn't call the others wrong. Perhaps they were marked wrong because they are not as good.
