    more silent without a telephone

    Hi,

    *self-made*

    - I am sure that life would be more silent without the telephone. (I am talking in general)
    - I am sure that life would be more silent without a telephone.

I am aware that sentence 1 sounds OK. Could you please tell me if the second one is OK. If yes, is the meaning different?

    Thanks.

Re: more silent without a telephone

Things can't be "more silent". "Silence" is the complete absence of sound so there is no comparative or superlative of "silent".

Life would certainly be quieter without a/the telephone.

I don't see any particular difference between the indefinite and definite articles in this specific sentence.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Not A Teacher

There is a possible difference between a and the in the sentence depending on the context meant.
Life would be quieter without a telephone, could indicate a wish not to own a telephone by that particular person.
Life would be quieter without the telephone, could mean a person wishes that the telephone had never been invented.
