    realized that she saw him before



    - . . . and then she realized that she saw/had seen him before.

    I know 'had seen' is OK, but I would like to ask if we can use the simple past in the above sentence or not. I think it sounds weird.

    In most contexts I can think of, only the past perfect seems natural to me.
