    FLAT

Do the expression "Lay it down flat" and "Lay it down so it is horizontal" mean the same thing? Is a "flat surface" the ame thing as a "plane surface"? Must a flat surface be also level?
    I need native speakers' help.

Yes, although the 2nd one seems contrived. You will also hear the first version without 'down' - "lay it flat".

More or less, yes, but the 2nd one is jargon - I wouldn't expect to hear 'plane surface' outside of some kind of math/physics/geometry class.

No. Flat just means all surfaces are on the same plane. Level means all edges are perpendicular to the plane below it.

Ever laid a pencil on a desk, only to see it roll off to one side? The desk was flat, but not level.
