    assumptions

    However divided the Indians of eastern North American may have been, they shared many cultural values and assumptions. Most Native Americans, for example, defined their place in society through kinship...

    What does this "assumptions" mean? It doesn't seem to mean its normal meaning. Is it "beliefs"?

    I think 'shared assumptions' is similar to 'shared beliefs', but I am not a teacher.
