    "This" or "That"?

    Mona can easily spell "onomatopoeia."

____ word, however, always sends me straight to the dictionary.

    *****

Would you please tell me which word ("this" or "that") is more appropriate?

    Thank you

    Re: "This" or "That"?

I would use "that" but I would accept "this".

I consider both acceptable, but I am not a teacher.

    Re: "This" or "That"?

Agreed, both are correct. "This" and "That" is a difficult topic-- my rule of thumb is to choose "that" as a default, unless you have a good reason to choose "this."

With your example, I agree: "that" sounds more natural... probably.

What's the focus of your thought?

If your focus is Mona, then "that word" makes me think that you're just using the word as an example, keeping the focus on Mona.

But, if your focus is on the word "onomatopoeia," then "this word" moves the focus to the word. It's almost like you're holding the word in your hand and showing it to someone.

"that" sounds more casual; "this" sounds more focused.
