    difference between "strategy" and "tactic"

    Managers' Responsibilities
A written code of ethics, an ethics hot line, employee training, and other tactics are important parts of any effort to ensure strong ethics in your company, but nothing is more crucial than the behavior of the company's owners and managers-...

What do you think is the difference between "strategy" and "tactic"? I've always thought "tactics" is a lower concept under "strategy". For example, a country's "strategy" to invade another country might not change, but its tactics can vary from "smiles" to "threats".

Re: difference between "strategy" and "tactic"

To me, a strategy is a plan designed to achieve an overall aim. A tactic is a plan designed to achieve a more specific, or detailed, aim.

Therefore, I think that you are right. You might undertake different tactics with the idea that successfully achieving those will enable you to realise your strategic plan.

Can you say a tactic is a subset of strategy?
    I am not a teacher.

Re: difference between "strategy" and "tactic"

I think in most cases you probably can. I only hesitate because I am trying to think of a situation where the two might be quite similar.

However, if you think of the game of chess, where the strategy is essentially to capture the king, you might try many different tactics in order to achieve that overall aim.

In my struggle to learn English, regarding these two words, I have always used this example of chess, where the difference is very clear. For instance there are whole chess books written about only either of them, as well as there are chess "tatict problems" and "strategy problems". As already stated by Eckaslike, while choosing a strategy in chess you make a whole longrun plan, aiming fo instance at open collumns, weak and strong points, leading to a well know pawn structure end game etc.
But if in between you manage to find a specific combination of a few moves which lead to a specific material gain, or a forcing mating net, that is tactics. This confirms both keneannu' s original thought as well as Eckaslike words. However, I have seen those words used interchangeably in many colloquial situations.

    They are not interchangeable.
