    subject/verb agreement

I was given some books as a gift. If someone asks me what my birthday present was, should I say:
My birthday present were some books? I am confused about what the subject in my sentence is.

    Re: subject/verb agreement

The subject is 'My birthday present'; the verb is 'was'.

    Re: subject/verb agreement

So the correct sentence would be: My birthday present was some books?
Similarly, if I had some eggs for breakfast, can I say: My breakfast was some eggs?

    Re: subject/verb agreement

Yes make the verb agree the grammatical subject.

You could rewrite. I received some books for my birthday.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
